The CMTA National Conference Hosted by RMTBC is happening in Vancouver, September 6 – 7, 2024.

The conference is dedicated to evidence informed research on the benefits of registered massage therapy and what the future could hold for Massage Therapy. Internationally recognized presenters will speak on such topics as rehabilitation, diversity, pain management and other areas of practice. The conference will stimulate dialogue and encourage networking between colleagues to:

INTRODUCTION

The Myofascial Cupping Technique™ was developed in 2002 by David Sheehan and can provide profound benefits for your clients, particularly with assisting the body in maintaining Range Of Motion, eliminating Myofascial Trigger Points and reducing restrictive and sometimes-painful fascial adhesions commonly found from repetitive movement originating from sports and the workplace. By reducing fascial adhesions, while encouraging optimal hydration levels of soft tissue, Myofascial Cupping can assist in reducing the incidence of injury and maintaining functional soft tissue.

The Myofascial Cupping Technique™ is a fabulous addition to the toolbox for Massage Therapists. It is a modified version of the ancient Eastern-style cupping with major differences that include targeting the musculoskeletal system rather than meridian systems used by traditional Chinese practitioners and using the cups in a moving sequence, rather than stationery.

Dave’s special interest with burns patients has lead to the beginnings of a future Clinical Trial in Hobart Hospital Burns Clinic. We have a short documentary demonstrating Dave’s techniques showing positive effect on burns scar tissue reducing ‘contracture’ and associated neurogenic pain along with discussion regarding how these techniques translate perfectly into the clinic for other types of scar tissue work.

This Level 1 foundation course is part of a series of courses David has taught to Physiotherapists and Soft Tissue Therapists at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, which is the peak body for elite athletes in Australia.

PRESENTER/FOUNDER - DAVID SHEEHAN (AUSTRALIA) 

David has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement), Diploma of Health Science (Remedial Massage) and Diploma of Education. His career highlights include working as a lead sports trainer with various football clubs, which included the use of vacuum cupping for both prevention of and treatment for injuries. Over time, David has developed these skills and now teaches his own energy efficient and effective cupping techniques to massage therapists and physiotherapists in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, London and the USA.

LEAD INSTRUCTOR - MONTY CHURCHMAN

Monty has been a Registered Massage Therapist since 1996 and is a CSMTA (SF). He is proud to be a member of both the MTAS (Massage Therapists Association of Saskatchewan) and the CSMTA (Canadian Sport Massage Therapists Association). Currently he practices in Saskatoon.

Monty has served on the Education and Exam committees, as well as being a current Provincial Board examiner with MTAS. He has also served as the CSMTA National Secretary from 2011-2015 and as Vice President, Ethics and Mentorship Chair from 2016-2022.  He also teaches the CSMTA Advanced Sport Massage weekend course as well as the Self Massage and the Athlete sessions on behalf of the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan.

Monty works with all levels of athletes and over the years has had the privilege to work with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders (1999-2002) as well as organizing and implementing massage therapy at Rider training camps (2013-2018), the University of Saskatchewan Women’s volleyball team (2006-2008) and is currently the sport therapist for the U of S Women’s Basketball team (2009-2022). He has also been part of the Integrated Support Team (IST) for the Canadian National Paralympic Swim Team (2015-present). This has seen him work many performance prep camps and World Championships across North America Europe, and the U.K. In 2023 Monty was selected to the Core Medical Team for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

LEAD INSTRUCTOR - PAUL BUFFEL

Paul works within a dynamic clinical practice on the leadership team of the multi-disciplinary Broadway Health Collective in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. With over 25 years in practice Paul utilizes the Myofascial Cupping Technique™ within his treatments on the mat or on the table, exploring the rhythms and stillness that support our capacity for adaptation, systemic resilience and healing.  Paul is also engaged in matters of regulation of the Massage Therapy Profession in Saskatchewan through membership with the Council of Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation (CLEAR), having completed the Executive Leadership course for Regulators, and sits on the Saskatchewan College of Massage Therapy Working Group.

Paul brings his experience as past Board Member and President of the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada (NHPC) and the fun of being a Board Member of Canada’s first Fat Bike Club, Fatlanders Fat Tire Brigade, to enrich his work within the profession, his teaching, and with clients.

How does it work?   By creating a Negative Pressure (tensional) above the surface of the tissues, we decrease the atmospheric pressure allowing the tissue to be lifted and thus causing changes in pressure beneath the skin including the muscle and surrounding fascia. Importantly, our gliding technique creates a traditional MFR technique (push/compression effect) using the leading rim of the cup, which is then followed by a ‘lifting’ negative pressure over the same area (pull effect). As the cup leaves the area we once again create a push/compression effect.
