Description: Neuromeningeal Manipulation 1 (NM1) is a specialized course focusing on the impact of trauma and whiplash.

Course Highlights:

  • Study the three primary areas of trauma as they relate to whiplash: physical laws, evaluation and treatment.
  • Learn the appropriate anatomy and physiology for treatment of whiplash and trauma conditions.

Course Description

This is a one-day LIVE & ONLINE seminar + self-paced video work and lab assignments.

In this course, students will learn how to manage the symptoms of degenerative CNS conditions with the use of manual lymphatic drainage and cranial sacral techniques to mobilize and remove proteins and debris from the brain. Students will be able to identify indications for treatment and implement specific treatment protocols to affect symptom reduction and increase function for clients with MS, Parkinson’s, dementia, Autism, ADHD, Long Covid, Post Chemo toxicity. This is a wonderful treatment addition for MLD trained therapists.

Course Objectives

  • The participant will be able to interpret the anatomy of lymphatics in the CNS and the anatomy of the CNS with respect to the physiological manifestation of diseases.
  • The participant will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the manifestation and presentation of MS, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and other degenerative processes of the brain.
  • The participant will be able to assess the presentation of symptoms in these processes and how MLD therapy can affect change and increase in function.
  • The participant will be able to establish treatment protocols for patients suffering from the manifestations of degenerative CNS disease by mobilizing proteins and debris on the brain via MLD.
  • The participant will be able to correctly implement the manual therapy protocols necessary for the manipulation of the CNS according to cranial and lymphatic anatomy.
  • The participant will be able to demonstrate patient education techniques related to soft tissue mobilization, exercise, compensation for side effects, and other CNS care patient needs.
  • The participant will be able to relate the basic anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system to that of a patient in a weakened state due to CNS restrictions.
  • The participant will understand how lymphatic congestion can impact cognition and lead to CNS pathologies.
  • The participant will be able to explain the gold standards of lymphatic care in a patient who has had a lymph node removal or impairment.
  • The participant will be able to review and become familiar with current CNS research (from the last five years), CNS lymphatics, and its interrelationship with cumulative degenerative conditions in the body.

What to Bring

  • Wear or bring loose-fitting.
  • A mat and blanket (or portable massage table and linens if you prefer).
  • Comfortable clothing for the lab portion.
  • The course will be conducted through the Zoom platform, ensuring a seamless learning experience.
  • Participants can expect to receive comprehensive course details five days prior to the start date for optimal preparation.
  • Upon completion of the live, online 1-day component, participants will gain access to a wealth of resources, including instructional videos and engaging lab assignments.
  • Additionally, PDF versions of the course presentation and curated links to supplementary videos will be provided for continued learning.

About Carmen

Carmen Recupero, MBA, LPTA, CMT, CLT-LANA, is a licensed physical therapist assistant and certified massage therapist with a specialty certification in lymphatic therapy. She currently provides inpatient and outpatient lymphatic therapy to clients with a variety of diagnoses through her practice, Lymphatic Care Specialists, LLC, and teaches Lymphatic Pathology at the Blue Ridge School of Massage in Blacksburg, Virginia.

She holds an MBA from Darden, UVA, Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management from California College of Health Sciences in National City, California, and an Associate of Science in Physical Therapy (Magna Cum Laude) from Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, Virginia. She completed a 140-hour certification course in Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Complex Decongestive Physiotherapy through the Upledger Institute and has extensive experience in Foeldii, Chikly, Vodder and Upledger methods. She integrates the techniques in her approach.

Carmen has worked in a variety of health care settings over the last 14 years, both as a clinical therapist and in administration. Carmen has conducted national and international presentations on the prevention and management of lymphedema in cancer patients and on the development of lymphedema programs in acute and outpatient care.
